How to Store a Quadcopter Properly

Before purchasing a quadcopter, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with its operation, maintenance, and storage requirements. Since quadcopters are typically used during warmer months and in clear weather, they need to be stored appropriately at the end of the flying season, usually in late autumn. Proper storage ensures that your device remains functional and ready for use come springtime. Here’s a guide on how to store your quadcopter to prevent damage and prolong its lifespan.

Storage Conditions

To avoid post-winter repairs, ensure the following conditions in the storage area:

  • Temperature: Maintain a range of +20°C to +25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • Sunlight Protection: Store away from direct sunlight.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the area is well-ventilated.
  • Dry Environment: Keep the drone away from water splashes or high-humidity zones.
  • Electromagnetic Shielding: Avoid storing near appliances that emit electromagnetic radiation.

The best storage options include a shelf in a cabinet, utility room, or heated garage. When considering a quadcopter purchase, plan its storage location in advance.

Preparing the Quadcopter for Storage

To minimize the risk of damage:

  • Disassemble Components: If possible, remove or securely fix moving parts, such as propellers. Detach the camera and battery for separate storage.
  • Use Protective Cases: While the original packaging is an option, a specially designed carrying case or bag is ideal. These cases often feature soft inner linings and hard exteriors to protect against impacts, and they make transportation more convenient.
  • Battery Care: Batteries should be stored at a charge level of 40–65%. Most modern drones have a storage mode for this purpose. Keep batteries in protective covers, stored away from sunlight, at a temperature below +25°C (77°F).

Preparing for a New Flying Season

When spring arrives, conduct a basic maintenance check:

  1. Battery Inspection: Ensure no swelling, corrosion, or damage. Fully charge the battery.
  2. Drone and Controller Check: Inspect for dents, rust, or misaligned components. Ensure all parts are securely attached.
  3. Reassemble the Drone: If components were removed, reassemble them.
  4. Update Software: Install the latest firmware updates.

Perform a test flight at a low altitude and short distance to confirm functionality. Following these simple steps will help extend the quadcopter’s operational lifespan and reduce the likelihood of malfunctions or costly repairs.
